Set the face to close and you shut the face by 1.5 degrees and add a degree of loft, which will make the club easier to hit. When you set the face to open it changes the angle by 2.5 degrees and decreases the loft by 1 degree. This uses a sleeve on the hosel to offer 3 options for the face angle are clear and easy to understand and adjust. Combine the moveable weights with the new adjustable hosel and you do have a much more flexible and accurate custom fitting process than before.

The lighter forged composite crown helps the increase the club’s MOI and unlike the Diablo Octane driver, the carbon pattern is hidden from view.Ĭallaway has been using adjustable weights in their drivers since 1999, but they were pre-fitted, so the RAZR Fit driver is the first model where you have been able to adjust them yourself or with the help of a fitter. Now that may not sound like much, but it’s probably worth about half a club less into the green.

The 455 cc head has a lovely shape and Callaway say it is 27% more aerodynamic than the RAZR Hawk driver which equates to an additional 1.3 miles per hour extra clubhead speed. I wish I didn't have to send this club back.We were among the first to test the Callaway RAZR Fit driver and we were very impressed as the sound and feel are excellent. I stood on every tee feeling confident I could hit the fairway, and my good shots were every bit as good as the ones I hit with my trusty R11. The verdict: The RAZR Fit is a good club.

I wasn't crazy about the sound at impact, which is more muted than the sharp crack of the R11, but I was pleasantly surprised with distance and trajectory on a number of drives. I didn't have a launch monitor to verify those findings, but I played 27 of the 45 holes on my home course, Twin Lakes CC, where I know how far my good shots go on every hole.

How did the RAZR Fit measure up? On off-center hits, the ball didn't seem to fly quite as far as misses with my R11, but when I did catch one on the center of the face, the RAZR Fit might have been a few yards longer. Straight is good, but as a short hitter I'm always looking to pick up a few extra yards. My one bad miss was a duck hook, the result of a flip-the-hands swing. I played 45 holes with the club and missed only a handful of fairways and only one by more than a few yards. The first few balls I hit on the range went dead straight, so I wasn't about to mess with the weights or face angle. Luckily, the Callaway demo fit my swing right out of the box and I didn't have to play around with the adjustability features in fact, I left the wrench in its bubble wrap and never touched it. Since I have been playing an R11 for more than one year, I was able to make a side-by-side comparison. The test: The RAZR Fit is Callaway's answer to TaylorMade's R11 driver. The crown is a forged composite, a new metal that is stronger and lighter than titanium. The clubhead design uses Streamlined Surface Technology to reduce drag. The Opti-Fit Adjustability System allows the golfer to adjust the club's face angle to three different positions (open, square and closed) and includes two weights (12 grams and 2 grams) which allow the golfer to shift the club's center of gravity. The skinny: The RAZR Fit is Callaway's adjustable driver, which hit the market in February and retails for $399. The specs: Demo model had a 9.5-degree head a 60-gram, regular flex Aldila Rip'd graphite shaft, and a Golf Pride cord grip. *Equipment review is a regular feature in which Gary D'Amato reviews new golf clubs, products, services and accessories.
